Terra & Tide
Bali
Bali rewards a slower trip more than most islands its size. Rather than trying to see everything, most good itineraries pick two or three bases and settle into each for a few days — a jungle stay, a stretch of coast, and maybe a quieter village in between.
Where to base yourself
- Ubud — rice terraces, temples, and the island's cultural centre
- Canggu — surf, beach clubs, and a fast-growing digital nomad scene
- Uluwatu — cliffside temples and some of Bali's best surf breaks
- Amed — a quiet, low-key alternative on the northeast coast
- Sidemen Valley — rice terraces without the Ubud crowds
Don't miss
- Sunrise hike up Mount Batur, followed by breakfast at the summit
- A sea temple at sunset — Tanah Lot or Uluwatu, both dramatic against the water
- A traditional Balinese dance performance in Ubud
- A day trip to the Gili Islands or Nusa Penida for a different pace
Ten to fourteen days is a comfortable length for a first trip — enough time to move between two or three bases without feeling rushed.
