Few places compress this much history into a single trip. Egypt's monuments have stood for thousands of years, and seeing them in person — the pyramids rising straight out of the desert, temples still standing along the Nile — has a way of resetting your sense of scale.
Cairo is the usual starting point, chaotic and enormous, with the Giza plateau just on its edge. From there, a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan strings together some of the country's most complete ancient sites, and the Red Sea coast offers some of the best diving anywhere in the world as a change of pace.
