Rice terraces in Bali

Bali rewards a slower trip more than most islands its size. Rather than trying to see everything, most good itineraries pick two or three bases and settle into each for a few days.

Where to base yourself

  • Ubud — rice terraces, temples, and the island's cultural centre
  • Canggu — surf, beach clubs, and a fast-growing digital nomad scene
  • Uluwatu — cliffside temples and some of Bali's best surf breaks
  • Amed — a quiet, low-key alternative on the northeast coast
  • Sidemen Valley — rice terraces without the Ubud crowds

Don't miss

  • Sunrise hike up Mount Batur, followed by breakfast at the summit
  • A sea temple at sunset — Tanah Lot or Uluwatu
  • A traditional Balinese dance performance in Ubud
  • A day trip to the Gili Islands or Nusa Penida

Ten to fourteen days is a comfortable length for a first trip.
