The Ring Road loops the entire island. A full loop takes 10–14 days done properly.
The route, roughly
- Reykjavík to Vík — the Golden Circle, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss
- Vík to Höfn — black sand beaches, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon
- Höfn to Egilsstaðir — the fjords of the east coast
- Egilsstaðir to Akureyri — Lake Mývatn's volcanic landscape
- Akureyri back to Reykjavík — the west coast, Snæfellsnes detour
Practical notes
- Rent a 4x4 outside summer
- Book accommodation well ahead in July and August
- Fuel stations thin out — don't let the tank get below a quarter
- Visit in winter for a shot at the northern lights
- Pack for four seasons regardless of when you go
