Morocco packs an unusual amount of variety into one country — desert, mountains, coastline, and cities that feel like nowhere else, all within a few hours of each other. If you're planning a first trip, these are the places worth building an itinerary around.

• Marrakech — the medina, the souks, and Jemaa el-Fnaa square after dark
• Chefchaouen — the blue-washed old town in the Rif Mountains
• Erg Chebbi — Sahara dunes, best seen by camel at sunrise or sunset
• Fes — the oldest and largest car-free urban area in the world
• The Atlas Mountains — day hikes or multi-day treks from a Berber village base
• Essaouira — a windswept coastal town, a slower alternative to Marrakech
• Aït Benhaddou — a fortified clay village used in countless film productions
• Todra Gorge — dramatic canyon walls, popular with climbers and hikers

Planning tip

Most itineraries link Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains, and the Sahara into one loop over 7–10 days. Trying to add the north on the same trip usually means picking one region to go deeper into rather than rushing all of them.
