Santorini's postcard image is real, but concentrated in a couple of villages that get very crowded, very fast.

Where to watch sunset

Oia is the famous choice, but Imerovigli offers a similar caldera view with fewer people.

Villages worth your time

• Oia — the classic view, best visited early morning
• Imerovigli — quieter caldera views, especially at sunset
• Fira — the island's hub, most restaurants and nightlife
• Pyrgos — a hilltop village with almost none of the crowds

Skip or shorten

The Red Beach is often overcrowded — Kamari or Perissa beaches are calmer alternatives.

Where to stay

Cave-style hotels in Oia or Imerovigli come at a premium; Fira or Kamari cut the cost.
